I like the beginning of a new year as it typically follows a time of great enjoyment from being with friends and family. It also provides the opportunity to pause, catch your breath and to assess and modify goals. In previous years after assessing the years events and activities I’ve tried to select one or two words to describe the future. Those in the past have included change, preparations and accomplishments. In the January 2011 newsletter I used the word “opportunity” as I believed that our community, structure and economy were positioned to be successful.
Our local economy continued to move forward in 2011. Existing industry growth, sales tax collections and even unemployment rates were better than most in Tennessee. I believe that another endorsement of our partnership was found in the Amazon.com announcement. I can tell you that this was the result of over six months of hard work and commitment of our elected officials, public servants, board volunteers and others. The fulfillment center will not only add to our logistics industry but will also continue to validate our existing internet, electronic marketing and administration operations.
Other positive activities included growth by our existing manufacturing and service industries, increased sales tax collections and an unemployment that was never higher than seventh in the state. Our work however is not done. We will continue to promote and work with clients to expand and provide additional commercial, industrial and service industries to this community.
So what is the word or words for 2012? I believe that it has to be Thank You! Thank you for the opportunity to serve in an economic organization that has proven to be the model used throughout the state. Thank you for the direction and support of our volunteers, board members and elected officials who give of their time and expertise. The retirement of Dianne Fletcher brought the promotion of Tammy Stokes to the new position of Marketing and Communications Manager and the hiring of Jennifer Rowland as Administrative Assistant. We look forward to 2012 and want to thank you for your continued support.
